Rep. Liz Cheney keeps Republican leadership job

Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney retained her post as the third most powerful House Republican, sidestepping broad backlash within the party for her vote last month to impeach then-President Donald Trump.

Republicans debated Cheney’s future during a tumultuous, hours-long, closed-door meeting of House Republicans on Wednesday that ended with Republicans voting to keep her as chair of the GOP Conference.

The vote was 145-61 in favor of Cheney, with one abstaining. Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy called it a “resounding shot in the arm” for the Wyoming Republican.

After the vote, Cheney said the result was “making clear that we’re not divided and that we’re not going to be in a situation where people can pick of any member of leadership.”
